It has never been easier to DJ. Anyone with enthusiasm and practice can get behind the decks thanks to inexpensive equipment, extensive internet music collections, and social media as a springboard. Although there are less obstacles to admission, it is more difficult than ever to have a successful DJ career. Venues are getting smaller, the scene is packed, and music consumption habits are shifting.

These are the main obstacles that DJs encounter nowadays, along with strategies for overcoming them.

1. An Oversaturated Market

"Everyone else is also a DJ" is a statement that is getting more and more accurate. The competition is intense since there are so many DJs coming from all over the world. Having mixing abilities alone is no longer enough; you also need to distinguish out with a distinctive style, innovative branding, and effective networking.

ree

Advice: Put your energy into creating a distinctive sound or performing style that captures your individuality. Don't simply focus on your playlists; create a brand around your musical personality.

 2. Harder Breakthroughs, Fewer Venues

Due to increased rents, more stringent laws, and changing nighttime preferences, numerous pubs and clubs have had to close. As a result, DJs have less chances to play live and develop a devoted fan base through residencies and word-of-mouth engagements.

ree

Advice: Don't depend just on conventional locations. Investigate other performance venues, such as pop-up events, rooftop parties, private parties, or even live activations in partnership with businesses.

3. Viewers Are Using the Internet

DJ sets are consumed differently by listeners today. Instead of attending a live performance, many people would rather listen to music on streaming services, YouTube mixes, or carefully created playlists. DJs find it more difficult to make a living solely from performances as a result of this change.

ree

Advice: Create a web presence as a tip. Post mixes, stream live on Twitch, or post brief performance snippets on Instagram and TikTok. You may reach audiences all around the world with online exposure, expanding your reach beyond your local community.

4. The Need for New Ideas

DJs must look outside conventional club culture if they want to flourish. Virtual performances, VR festivals, interactive live streaming, and fan groups that are subscription-based are all presenting new options. Those that are open to trying out different formats and platforms can stay current and create new revenue sources.

ree

Advice: Be adaptable and welcome change. Try streaming, look into partnerships, and vary the ways you make money from your craft, whether it be through instruction, content production, or sales.

Important to Remember -

"Nowadays, becoming a DJ involves more than just choosing songs and beat-matching. It all comes down to resilience, inventiveness, and flexibility. Successful DJs are not just outstanding entertainers but also entrepreneurs, inventors, and community builders." DJ SHVM (Shivam Chawla)
